This Was About More Than Just A Few Revised Standards...
The HCPC revised some of its standards this year [1], and it’s fair to say there was a bit of reaction in the Physiotherapy community.
I was intrigued, as much by my own response as anyone else’s. My relationship with the standards had until this year been somewhat perfunctory. Intermittent pangs of conscience mostly around box-ticking time would trigger some frantic private updating, which would generally calm me down until the next bi-annual stirring.
Then there were those early whisperings of updates, and murmurings of a September roll out date. It all sounded a bit official. Videos and webinars were released to help ensure compliance, and also to reassure us. I wasn’t sure how well that reassurance was landing however as comments on The MSK Hub[2] and other online groups became increasingly feverish. Not normally prone to over-thinking on these sorts of topics (most other topics, but not these) my internal narrative was,
“Shit, if there’s this much emphasis on updates, does that mean they think I’ve got encyclopaedic knowledge of the existing standards?”
